Little Book of Coffee (How to Choose It, Store It, Brew It, and Serve It)

Product Description

I didn’t start drinking coffee until I was in my 20s. It just tasted awful to me, and I didn’t understand the passion some people seemed to have about this beverage. Then I realized it was because I was drinking awful coffee.

When I started talking to my friends about it, they said it was because I was drinking coffee that was (1) pre ground (2) probably very stale and (3) made with inferior beans. Hmm.

So I did some checking and found that there are a LOT of opinions about what makes a good cup of coffee. Mild? Robust? Cream? Sugar? French Roast? Kona Blend? And the big question: Was Jamaica Blue Mountain worth $40+ a pound?

I figured out the answer to those questions – for me. But I also found out that it’s completely a matter of personal taste. Coffee purists say that if you add anything to your coffee – cream, sugar, flavorings – that you’re a heathen and don’t deserve to live. The rest of us would really just like to enjoy a nice cuppa Joe.

So, in this little book I’ve tried to stick to the basics. Hopefully by the end of it you will know whether or not you’re drinking a good cup of coffee.

Here are a few of the chapter titles for you:

About The Beans
The Art of Grading Beans
Judging Beans The Barista Way
Roasting at Home (Crazy?)
Freshness Tips
Picking The Perfect Grinder
Different Brewing methods
Coffee Makers / Single Cup Coffee Makers
Regular or Decaf?
Flavored Coffees / Specialty Coffees
Recipes
For Fun - Cupping

1.0 out of 5 stars Krups should be embarrassed with this design., September 5, 2009
This review is from: KRUPS KT4065, 10-Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
We have used Krups thermal carafe coffee makers for years, needing to replace them every few years because of hard water problems. We bought a Zojirushi BD-15 and it leaked water from the reservoir like a sieve, from the base of the unit. We then bought this Krups and were disappointed as soon as we started to use it. First, the lid of the coffee maker pops open to expose the basket and the fill chamber, which is a small opening in the back right corner. This isn't so bad by itself, except that you can't fill the reservoir with the carafe because the lid sufficiently obstructs the fill opening, particularly if you use the carafe which needs to be almost fully inverted because of its design. We had to use a separate container for this step. The opening of the carafe is so narrow (2.5") you can't put a hand through it to clean it.

The clincher was that the coffee maker overflowed onto the counter as it was brewing (not from the top of the basket, but from the top of... Read more

This review is from: KRUPS KT4065, 10-Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This Krups coffee machine is flawed, yet I find it has positive attributes worth considering. It makes the best home brew that has ever passed over my palate. Even the reviewers with a negative comment have not criticised the quality of the coffee produced. I have been brewing fresh roasted and gound gourmet coffee for many years without realizing that the coffee maker was such a crucial part of the process. My morning cup of joe is now coffee house quality and flavor. I am in coffee heaven.

There is a problem with pouring the coffee from the carafe. It pours slowly and deliberately with precision. Attempting to speed up the process results in spillage that is caused by the thumbnail sized movable cap on the underside of the carafe cover. (See follow up post for full details.)

Pouring water into the fill tank is a problem if you use the carafe unless you raise the carafe over the top of the upright open lid as you empty the carafe. Admitedly, no one should... Read more

...but this may be the worst coffee maker ever designed. I've cleaned up my last overflow and am heading out to replace it. Yes, it looks great, and when it works, it makes good coffee. I was even willing to put up with the difficult water reservoir and the hard-to-read water gauge, but there is a problem with the design of the small flaps in the lid and the coffee ends up everywhere but in the pot. And today the small plastic tab that makes it possible to open the lid broke off. Could anything more go wrong with this design?

5.0 out of 5 stars if you like moka, this is the ticket, May 3, 2006
    By
This review is from: Mr. Coffee ECM20 Steam Espresso Maker (Kitchen)
I have read so many negative reviews of this wonderful little moka machine, I must put in my 2 cents. First, this is a stream machine, meaning it makes moka not espresso. If you like Bialetti but want cappuccino instead of cafe latte, then this is perfect. The grind must be close to espresso, finer than for Bialetti, and you must tamp it down, but no tamper included. There is only 1 knob, yes it is stiff, but i don't have arthritis. The round design makes it easy to handle even though it is very light. It descales with...vinegar! How about that, actually a traditional machine. The panarello works, just put in extra "cup" of water for steaming. Make 2 "cups", not 1 or 4, and always start with cold machine, or use very, very cold water. Stop the brewing as soon as moka hits 2 "cups" or it starts to steam instead of brew, then switch the knob to steam for the milk. If you don't, coffee will taste slightly burned. I have owned espresso and moka machines from USD5 to USD1,000 over a period... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Watch your grind, June 3, 2005
    By
This review is from: Mr. Coffee ECM20 Steam Espresso Maker (Kitchen)
I picked this product up at a local store for mid $20's after getting sick of making my coffee with a stove top espresso machine. I couldn't see spending $100+ for something conceptually as simple as an espresso machine. I know someone who got a simple Krupps machine for about $40 years ago and it still works just great. But since I couldn't find anything else in the sub $40 range, I settled on this one.

It makes a fine cup of coffee if you just want to use prepackaged coffee grinds or you use a basic coarse to medium grind. BUT, when I tried to use a very fine grained "espresso" grind on my beans, almost nothing came out. It seems that too fine a grind stops up the filter holes and the machine just doesn't have the oomph to force the water/steam through.

    Also, it does suffer from
    - a very difficult to turn knob (don't get this product if you have arthritis)
    - a caraf lid that won't stay on let alone stay properly oriented

    So... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Pro and Con of this machine, August 29, 2007

This review is from: Mr. Coffee ECM20 Steam Espresso Maker (Kitchen)
I must confess that I spent a lot of time trying to get a good coffee maker, I had a Krups Single Serve My Cafe for about a year, I was never happy with it anyway. I am the only coffee drinker in my family, so I do not want to shop for a drip 10 cup type of coffee machine, so I bought this one.

Here is my review of this machine:

    1. Build quality - Yes, the knob and top cover is a bit of hard to turn, build quality is so so, but I think the inards of this machine is ok, it generate steam quickly and appear to be built with no better or worse quality than many of the steam type espresso machines.

    2. Coffee - Here is something that I am really surprise of, I think it makes great coffee, I run through it with three different kind of Ethiopian coffee, to my surprise, I can tell the subtle different among them, this machine produce very good coffee. Coffee is also hot enough contrary to some of the reviews mentioned.

    3. Cost - I think this... Read more
